Welcome to Petrina and the gangs life.

This page is to try and share some of the joys, the tears and the unexpected that happens every week at NANNA's.

It is not for the faint hearted, nor is it designed to 'keep the peace' it is to tell it as it is.

Perhaps a bit of old fashioned honesty will make us all think twice!

Warning: This page may contain some upsetting images, stories and situations out of our control.

Tissues maybe required, something to throw and sometimes a stress manager may also be required!

A big Thank you to everyone who has responed to this page, I am sorry if tears have happened, but remember some of these little souls have never had a tear shed for them (other than mine) before, so thank you for caring enough to show your feeling for them and please keep reading.

What a fantastic start to the New Year, lots of animals coming and going (although that's not brilliant, just the fact that we are rehoming is great!), lots of fund-raising every weekend and an increase in direct giving, all wonderful for the start of a new year.
NANNA is also moving onward and upward, we have been able to increase the size of our facilities and the move will be happening over the Easter period, we hope! Although we cannot afford to grow, this move will allow us to offer better facilities for the animals and bring Higglety Pigglety and NANNA under one roof, which has been our dream for many years.
We also have some new Trustees coming on board and full details will be posted soon. so all in all, brilliant start to the New Year.

What a brilliant start to the New Year - snow! I love the snow and the peace it brings and the little ones looking at you when you open the door for them to go and have a tiddle. The shock when they see the snow for the first time or the old timers who look at you as if to say "Get a life!" The funniest was today when a couple of the little left over kittens from 2009, ran outside, as I opened the door for the dogs, and ploughed straight into the snow and both of them leapt into the air and jumped, claws out, all the way back into the house and then shock one leg at a time. They both looked at me as if to say "What the...........?
Freezing weather causes so many problems for animals, the sheep need extra feed along with the goats, pigs, horses, chickens, geese and most of the other farm animals. The water is frozen so we have to come up to the house to get extra water, they need lots of bedding and you can't exactly put a water bottle in with them like you can the cats or ferrets. To go to the field in the snow is like being on a completely different planet, the peace is wonderful but the joy in the animals eyes when they see you beats all of that........ That is why I love NANNA's, no matter what the world sends us the animals will always be here for us to help and they show us, in their eyes, how much they love what we do!
In 2010 we are going to help even more animals and we will do it, with your help and we will do it even when things look really bad, because the animals need us to succeed.
2010 will bring the same moans and groans, the same critics who think they can do better or what we are doing is wrong, but who cares what they think, it is what the animals think and the look in their eyes tells me we are getting it right!

Happy New Year everyone.
I thought I would start the new year off remembering some of the special times NANNA had in 2009 and some of the sad times too, you can't have one without the other but it is what you have learn't from both experiences that count.

2009 brought us much pain and heartache, it always hurts when we lose an animal, even if it has been with us only a short time, but when we lose one who has been with us, against all the odds, for a long time the pain is so sharp, people say you get use to it. You don't you just use to having a void in your heart. In 2009 we lost so many of our long termers that at one point (or two), I felt I could not continue with the ache in my heart, but then another little face so needy would look at me and somehow I found the strength to continue.

I am only going to mention a few of the animals who we lost this year. Daisy, Tiny Tim, Popsicle, Polly -Popcorn, Minty, Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum and Posh, Gabriel and Pagan, Socks and Toffee, Rocky the fawn and New Years Eve to finish the year off we lost Simone.

Personally I lost two of my wonderful Newfies, Finn and Bella, my fantastic parrot Bilbo and the one little cat that NANNA stands for Candy-trickle bum. A very hard year and many more came in and touched our hearts and moved on the chase the butterflies in the sky.

Oswina survived having the garden fence landing on her, she broke her wing but she survived.

2009 also brought a lot of joy too, the joy of being allowed to have such wonderful animals in our lives to begin with, the wonderful team of volunteers, the students and all the youngsters who come into NANNA's every weekend to muck out the animals.

We have some fantastic memories too, Jamie swollowing the ring pull on a can of coke, Kirsty walking into the horse lorry and knocking herself out, Adam breaking his hand through temper, Steven throwing a ball for Sasha and dislocating his shoulder at the same time! Michael falling full face in the pig sty, Keren leaving to go to Uni and having us all in tears at Rockingham, Shannon locking herself in a cat cage for an hour, Keren piggy back riding! Adam stripping in the field because he got caught up in the barbed wire.

The charity has stuggled all year to keep open and we have seen more animals needing to come in then any other year, but we have made it. We have lost some volunteers this year but we have gain many new ones too, looking back we have had some crap in 2009 but we have also had some fantastic times too.

All in all we have loved and been loved - we can't ask for more than that. HAPPY NEW YEAR again xxxx

We have just lost the most wonderful Finn, it hurts so much I can hardly breath. One minute playing and the next being rushed to the vets and undergoing a two hour operation.

On Monday Finn twisted his gut and during his operation they had to remove his spleen, he came home to us on the Tuesday, but sadly passed away on Wednesday. I strongly believe he is now with his first Mummy Belinda, who passed away a year ago with cancer.
I can see them walking and swimming together.

Finn with his first Mummy Belinda now reunited

Christmas is only days away and we are going to have aprroximately 400 animals, of all different shapes and sizes with us this Christmas and an awful lot waiting to come in too, it is so sad that so many animals are going to be homless this Christmas.

I was asked if I felt is was worse this year than previous years?  Yes perhaps it is, last year we rehomed so many and managed to keep the pens flowing, this year we seem to be keeping the little mites longer than usual.

Someone brought a smile to my face, after I got over the shock of what was said, to which I am going to share with you some of the excuses and happenings that go on at NANNA. No names but the people will know only too well who I am on about!

A lady had been ringing us three times a week for about four weeks asking if we could take her cat, eventually we found room for the little cat - nine years old and just not wanted anymore, sad but true, she brought the cat over and we were talking about a donation and she stated that she gave £10 a month to the RSPCA and has done so for many years! I asked, politely, if she considered asking them to take her cat! Her reply was quite typical really, she said "My dear, they are full, I don't think you realise how busy they are!" I felt like telling her to take her unwanted cat, but the little mite looked so needy that I just accepted the £5 donation and opened the door for her to leave! We only had 65 cats in at the time, what's another one?

Another cat needing to come in, we were told the owner had mental health issues and they were having to move and could not take the cat and the vet had given them our number to see if we could help. We suggested that they rang us on the Tuesday and if the home visit went well we should be able to take the cat in on Wednsday - Not good enough, they took their cat to the vets and dumped it there?

Someone else decided they had had enough and wanted rid of their cat again we said we may be able to take the cat in on the Thursday, but they could not wait they took it to be put to sleep (murdered) because they wanted it gone now, this minute!

A man phoned because he was moving in with his girlfriend and she did not like cats! I advised him to strongly think about getting rid of his cats before he made a huge mistake. The cats will be with him no matter what he says or does - will she? We took in the cats but I give it a year before he's looking for a new forever home!

NANNA is now having to ask for a donation to take in animals because the cost to us for looking after so many has risen and we are struggling to keep our heads above water, but when I told someone we would take their pet ib but we would need a donation of approx. £20 to come with the pet, they said that it was disgusting because we were a charity and it was our duty to take the animal in!

Is it my duty? Are we not here to help the sick and injured and the strays? Is it not the duty of the owner to take care of their pets?

I just pray that we are still here in 2010 and for many years because one thing for sure, we may be getting more animals in, but we are also seeing the true selfish attitude of people who think the world owes them something and usually for nothing in return.

23/11/09
Each time things go bad we think it can't get any worse but someone or thing is always ready to prove it can. I personally can not wait for this year to end and a new one to start but only if all this heart break stops.
I know how lucky I am and that there are a lot of people worse off, but ocasionally it would be nice to get up in the morning and have a whole day of good news without the bad.
We have just been told that we have to go on proforma invoices because one of our suppliers is having financial difficultites, this is fine but we need to find extra money each month now to pay the account outstanding and pay the weekly account too!
NANNA has no income, just fund-raising constant fund-raising and that is getting so hard too.
We had the honour of a beautiful little fawn in our lives this month, Rocky was the name we gave him and he had been hit by a car and seriously hurt his leg and we paid for him to have an operation but sadly the little fawn did not make it and he passed away leaving a huge dent in our hearts.
We have Basset, Liquorice and Allsorts survived from the hand-rears and they are coming on leaps and bounds and rehoming seems to be picking up again.
We have a full fund-raising calender for December and can only pray we make it to next year.

07/10/09
It has been over two months since I have writen on this page and an awful lot has happened in that time, we have lost some more very dear little ones and our hearts are very heavy!
Tiny Tim (middle) has gone to chase those butterflies in the sky, with Polly-popcorn, Popsicle and Raven.

Snoopy got run-over leaving her with one broken leg and one with ligament damage and she is cage resting.
Victor the old grumpy rat has died and Nelson and Mandella have also past away.

Pagan and Gabriel both past away within four days of each other.

We have Fern fighting Myxo and also Sox but their partners Thistle and Toffee are looking great. We vaccinate all our rabbits twice a year and we have still been hit with it.
Buffy has lost her partner Giles at the Earls Barton Show when he got stung by a wasp! Walter is feeling his age and does not look so proud and he became a dad, but the chick did not survive.
Some of our volunteers have moved on, Keren is in University and is greatly missed, but she is coming back high days and holidays.
Lastly Oswina are ever faithful friendly Mother Goose broke her wing, when a garden panel blow off in the high winds and landed on her, but the goodnews is she is doing fine.

So forgive me for not writing on this page for a little while, hearts have been broken and time was needed to allow the healing process to begin.
Now we are battling with nine little hand-rears - WATCH THIS SPACE!

26/07/09
We are still feeling the loss of Candy and then we get hit again, Bella, one of our beautiful Newfoundlands has past away due to cancer and old age. She was one of the three who usually sat outside the shops checking out the shopping as people came out to see if there was anything she could eat! Here is a picture of Bella, with Teddy (left) and little Oliver (middle).
This photo was taken outside a shop in Cumbria just after a walk, where we had to lift her and Teddy over the stiles because they were too big to get through them. Oliver just went under them!
Bella was no longer wanted by her owners but her life ended being wanted and loved by all the volunteers at NANNA, she was matriarch to all the Newfies but grumpy with the kittens when they got too close!

One of our volunteers words said it all "Bella is up there on the fluffiest cloud, waiting for the cats to get too close!" RIP Bella you deserve the best cloud in the sky.

It hurts so much when we lose one of our little souls, but sadly there will always be another waiting to come in and need your love and attention that grieving always seem longer because you have to dust yourself down and get on looking after them. Quietly, whilst on your own, the tears start and you begin to go through all the names of who have gone to chase the butterflies in the sky, then you remember their funny little ways and a smile comes on your face again and you know it is them putting those thoughts into your head just to see you smile!

30/06/09
Nearly two months have passed since writing on this page and what two month it has been.
We have been really busy fund-raising and had a great time at all the events we have been to. The East Of England was a great success, but we also had a disaster when our 4x4 automatic gear box seized on us and we could not get the animals or caravan home, but we made it. Then the horse lorry failed it's MOT and we are now without 4x4 and lorry to get to the events we have on, but I am sure like always we will find away.
One of our longest special needs cats passed away leaving a huge gap in our lives. Her name was Candy aka Candy-trickle-bum and she was soon to be the grand old age of 6! Ordered to put her down by the RSPCA when we were with them but I refused, set up NANNA's and Candy was one of the reasons we are here today.
Candy was and is what NANNA is all about, a home for the unwanted, the sick and the ones that no-one else will take in, due to health, age or just looks.
Candy trickled pooh everywhere she went, she also gave kisses to everyone she met.
We were reported to the RSPCA more times because of Candy than all the other animals put together, because people judge without questions or finding out the full facts. I did not help matters because I refused to hide her and lock her up when people called, she was too special to keep hidden.
Candy was a purrfect name for this little cat who loved life, she was as sweet as Candy and when she trickled pooh all over you, like candy, she was bad for your health - RIP sweet, sweet Candy xxx

Wow, is it that long since I have written on this page? what has happen since I last wrote? An awful lot and it is going to take me a couple of days or so to write it up so please bear with me!
I am writing this whilst I am flat on my back due to hurting it just before Easter and I still cannot stnd or sit for long without tears.
So do we start with the moans or the good things that have happen since last writing?
I think I will start off with good, then moan (you all know how I like a good moan) then finish on a high!
Good News
We have made it through the winter months and come out the other end with no money, lots of bills, but we have helped an awful lot of animals.
Manuel-Ronaldo has come home and has landed on his naughty paws by being offered a purr-fect home with one of our volunteers, so we can see him whenever we want, he even has his own following on our , so why not take a peek at the little chap.
We did an appeal for new homes for rabbits and ended up taking in 22 rehoming 0! Not quite what we wanted but hey, it's the way it goes sometimes.
Sad News
We have had a few deaths in the house with our special needs cats and I also lost one of my own cats too. It is always sad when we loose the battle with the special needs cats but the upside is the memories they leave us. I think we will all smile when we think of Prof Plumb especially when he came home from the vets after being castrated and we change his name to Prof Plumb-less!
We also cried when our oldest rabbit passed away, she came to us aged 9 when the children had outgrown her! We had her for 4 years and paired her up with an older buck and she died at the ripe old age of 13 at least she had companionship in her final years.
A moan
Can you believe that someone told the organisers of the Rushden Cavalcade that we were not doing the event this year and they did not even bother to ring us to see if this was true? They just gave someone our place!
I use to get upset and mad with these people now however I believe in the fact that when you do bad, it come back three times worse and bites you hard. So bite, bite, bite just as long as no animal gets hurt!
Someone posted on the forum that we were getting done for fraud! This person signed on for one day only and asked the question, the funny thing is they have not had the guts to reply to our emails asking for further information, so another trouble maker? Who cares?
Good News
We have a full fund-raising calendar, but we can fit in more! why not check out our  and see where we are going this year.

17/02/09
Ok the write up on the 17th Jan for some reason did not save! Such is life.
A lot has happened since writing last on this page, we lost our broadband and could not reply to emails, update the website and then to top it off we lost the phones too! It is amazing how people get stressed out because you did not get back to them! How could we, we had no way of knowing who had been in contact with us and being disabled and hardly leaving the house it is very difficult to go somewhere else and use someone else's computer - Oh yes, we are volunteers afterall!

This month we had to make a very hard decission about a young dog in our care and it has caused quite a lot of upset with one or two people within the charity, but the sad thing is at the end of the day it is NOT our feelings that count but the welfare of the animals and I will not be part of a charity who hides thing under the carpet or uses policies as reasons to do things. If a dog cannot be rehomed because it is deemed to be dangerous under the Dangerous Dog Act, then I will not keep that dog caged for the rest of his life just to keep him alive, that to me is wrong and being a believer in life after death, so why keep a dog caged because it is dangerous and stop it from moving on to the next life, which has got to be a better one then the one it just had? You can read all about the plight of Jay on the forum, there will be a whole page just for him and for people to express their views on the whole thing if you wish!

We have been very lucky so far this year with re-homing, but sadly we have had as many if not more animals come through or need to come through our doors. So if you are tinking of re-homing an animal please remeber the little ones here we have so many looking.

17th January 2009
It has been nearly two months since I last wrote on this site and a lot has happened, both personally and within the Charity. The run up to Christmas was busy, fund-raising and rehoming. Michael was in hospital and Carla was also very poorly at the same time and had to go off to your Nan's.
NANNA's youngsters came to the rescue though by helping out down the field and at the house with the animals and I can't say how proud I was that they were here helping and getting on with it. Not to mention Alison and Sharon who also gave up their time to help.
On the 20th December, Poppy, one of our re-homed dogs, gave birth to five puppies, that was a very pleasant surprise to all concerned. Adopt one dog and get five free!
Christmas arrived and we were still trying to get back on our feet, Sharon came in Christmas morning to help feed and sort the animals and we had a very quiet family time.

19/11/08
I have been told off because I have not put down on the website that the PRIDE IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE AWARDS have been presented and I won the award for Hard Work and Determination - so well done everyone at NANNA's, you deserve it!

16/11/08 - MOAN TIME

I was standing outside Collins Pet food supplies this weekend doing a collection with the Newfie girls when someone came up and asked me who I was collecting for, when I said NANNA, I got the reaction - Oh I would not give them a penny!

I was quite stunned to say the least, having never met this lady, nor to my knowledge had she ever come out to see us. So acting baffled I asked her why she felt like that?

Her reply was quite to the point that: She helped out at Animals In Need at Irchester and two of NANNA ex-trustees have moved over to them and it is well known that the animals are kept in awful conditions at NANNA's and that the trustees left because of the way the animals were kept.

She went on to say that the animals, are stressed, in poor health and they are trying to get us shut down!

I was stunned - again, but came out fighting - of course!

I explained that facts should be proven before being aired and how dangerous it was to slander and repeat gossip! I also explained that I was the Chairman for NANNA who had ordered one trustee off the premises and asked the other one to leave our charity after an an exta-ordinary meeting was held into her behaviour as our treasurer.

These two ex-trustees still retain property of the NANNA and have refused point-blank to return them. I also offer the lady a chance to come and meet our hard working volunteers - who keep animals in awful conditions - she declined!

Then one of our volunteers came in and said that she was told that the RSPCA were shutting NANNA down! - Information from a volunteer at Animals in Need Irchester.

Is this the same RSPCA who came out and did their inspection and said on the last two that they can give us NO WARNINGS - NO ADVISE - could not recommend us because some of our pens were too small for their policies, but we should all pull together and try and work together for the animals.

When starting NANNA we never thought we would be the size we are in such a short time, some say we ran before we learnt how to walk! Some think we were not needed as the big boys knew what they were doing and better equipped! Some smaller boys, who would like to think they were big boys only have time for themselves and use the even smaller charities, by picking and chosing what they will or won't take in.

There are charities out there critising ALL other charities but they still give out those charities numbers when the animal is not what they want to help. Usually due to age, colour or they don't take in from the public or the animal is ill!

The saddest thing of all is when volunteers, trustees or staff leave a charity that they have worked with, helped and at one time respected, starts bad mouthing that charity. Why? Was their judgment, at the time of starting, so far off the mark or did they leave because they were asked to? I left the RSPCA because their policies were to rigid for me to be able to work with, however I have the fullest respect for the local volunteers.

I am proud to be part of NANNA, because we don't pick and choose what we take, we take what needs to come in. My home is overtaken by animals that will not live long but they will have a life before they lose it, not just put down because of space, money or how it looks to the public.

We have helped so many other local charities in the fight to help animals, but only Wellingborough-Rushden Cat Protection, RAIN Oxfordshire and Wellingborough Dog Welfare have ever helped us in return. NANNA is ran as a non-profit, voluntary charity with no paid staff, in peoples homes and gardens and we work hard for the animals and not for what others think, but it does hurt!

When you give up time, money and your homes only to be critised by other charities who have money in the bank and always appealing for more but not apparently investing the money into foster homes or further facilities to help more animals, then that to me in hypocritical.

Please lets all pull together for the animals - stop bitching and get over it, at the end of the day, we are all profess to be here for the animals one thing we should all agree on.

I may be feeling really fed-up at the moment but I have news for some! NANNA is not and will not be defeated, we are here to stay - and we will be here to help another 6000 animals!

Now some sad news!
NANNA is closing down nine indoor cat pens due to the cost of running them, this is very sad because they are needed but if you are struggling to pay for them to stay open you need to look at the overall picture and that is closing nine to keep 24.

We have been to Newmarket and waiting some blood results on Gg, but we need to raise £2000 for further treatment, so we need to do an appeal for this because we would not be justified on spending what little money we have on one animal. So pleeeeeease help if you can!

We have a lot of fund-raising events throughout the winter, but they are for the day to day running cost, so if you would like to help raise funds for Gg, please let us have your ideas.

I am sorry if some feel this is not the place to air my views but you were warned at the start!

11/11/08
Well the hedgehogs are coming in thick and fast and they are not in brilliant condition either, most are starving - yet we had a good year for slugs, but that means a bad year for pellets and sadly many dead hedgehogs! We have been helping hedgehogs for a few years now and we love the Spring to see our winter visitors shuffle off down the garden path hopefully going on to a long and happy life.

We have really got the dog fostering off the ground, we have a new Dog Fostering Co-ordinator, who is giving up his time free of charge to help the dogs and our dog foster homes are brilliant too. If you would like to see what this is all about then please email us and we will fill you in.

I am going to try and see Manuel-Ronaldo on Friday so watch out for an update, since my illness I have not been to see him and I feel guilty, so Iwill take with me looks of new goodies for him to play with.

Christmas is just around the corner so I have made out the NANNA letter to Santa, so hopefully Santa will be kind to us again this year. We have an awful lot of animals in with us at the moment all looking for that purr-fect home and in the meantime they need looking after. I hope our list is fair, as I said money is always needed but homes are needed too and they are more important.

Daniel, our longest surviving volunteer turned 21 on Saturday and the NANNA Barmy Army through him a surprise birthday party and fun was had by all. Alison baked him a fantastic cake and we all put money in to pay for the hall and disco, it was fantastic to see everyone enjoying themselves and just to see Daniels face was worth the hard work.

Our Halloween Fancy Dance Car Rally was also very sucessful, although we were let down at the last minute by a group of people we had fun and we raised over £100.

Tomorrow Gg goes to Newmarket to see a specialist, so fingers crossed for this little dog. You can read up about this little soul on the special needs page, she really does deserve a chance. Please help her if you can.

Since writing last I have been extremely ill and hardly been out of my bed, but I am getting stronger and more capable of looking at the website again. I am so sorry that the site has been neglected but I could not lift my head off the pillow without it thumping and the knock on effect has meant the silly little things like answering the phones and emails have just been left.

Hopefully I am on the road to recovery, however slow, I am going to do as much as I can, when I can and not just get on with it whatever the hour!

We have had some gorgeous piglets in and they are doing great - we lost 5 and 5 have survived - they were only 11 hours old by the time they got to me and some were already flagging but we managed to get five through it and they have now got very posh names.

18/09/08
Well we have some sad news and some good news and some very good news and some unbelievable news.
First the sad news, Jake's cancer has come back and it is throughout his body and he has gone down hill so fast, he has been living in my bedroom for a little while now and he has just slept, so with the advise from the vet's and the result's from the bloods and biopsy and the condition of the little man we decided to end his suffering. So on Monday Jake was put to sleep and his little frail body has gone for cremation and his ashes will be returned to us along with a little kitten called Fizzy lemonade who also lost her life at just six month.
Some unbelieveable news: We took in an older cat (as we do!) because his owner had died and the home was sold and he moved to a garage which has now also been sold, so this senior-kitizen was ownerless, homeless and then garageless! So on coming to us with a slight heart murmur, bad gums and a touch of arthritis, we thought he would be with us for the rest of his life but to our delight he has landed on his paws! Gilbert has found a new forever home and his new "staff" donated a huge amount of food and pet supplies and very large donation! How wonderful is that? But the best thing is Gilbert has a new forever home, he may not be young but he has got lots of love to give and now he is also going to recieve a huge amount of love too.
Some very good news: We have just been told we have a large donation on it's way which is always very welcome and some Good news is Carla did not break her ankle!!!!
Let me explain:- Carla went with her dad to pick up a new horse that was coming in for re-homing but the little sweetheart decide to play up a little! Carla got in the way and as the horse reared up Carla managed to move a good chunk of her body out of the way of the horse, but left her ankle behind! The horse came down on her ankle and Carla is now on crutches and the horse is staying for now with her owner.
This was not the horses fault it was very frightened and obviously she did not want to leave her owner and went calmly and happily back to her stable - Carla went to hospital!

Well what a month we have had! Manuel is doing great and has come on leaps and bounds and thanks to him NANNA has landed on it's feet too, we have paid all our outstanding accounts and have a little left over.

We have been to the Balloon Festival, Holcot Steam Rally. Earls Barton Steam rally, Delapre Family Fun Day and Pleydell Family Fun Day and we still have lots of events to do. We are all running out of steam and most days I find I am laying out on the sofa having even more trouble moving. Some of the events I have been too ill to go and do much but thankfully I am only a figure head and the team all work well together.

Most of our very young volunteers have now moved on to college or they have got jobs! We need the young ones because they are the future of the charity, so if you are young and energetic (16 - 99.9) and looking for something to do with your spare time please ring us and come and meet the crowd.

We have lots of animals in our care (as always), but some need even more special care than others and we have had some on treatment with our fingers crossed.
Jake our darling little black and white boy who had cancer of the leg, which we removed came back to us and he is in quite a bad way. It looks as if his cancer could be back, he has just undergone a further operation to remove three lumps on body and they have been sent of for biopsies so fingers crossed for the little chap.

Jefferson has also been to the vets as he seems to have a mouth full of ulcers - ouch! He has had bloods and they were all fine, so that was good, but he is a very poorly boy who is too poorly to have any operations to sort the gums out so again fingers crossed.

On the good side we found homes for Tiger and Susie and Tete and we seem to be moving again on the rehoming of ALL the animals. We have rehomed more rabbits than we normally do in August and the cats are well on track as well. All in all life is good!

Little Manuel has taught us that although we are here to help the animals the animals are also here to help us! How wonderful is that? For each tear they is a smile and for each down there is an up waiting to happen.

NANNA will always go through ups and downs but we will always be here for the animals and one day we will have money in the bank and more accommodation than we need but we will not be so big that we forget what we are here for - the animals.

We have had so many calls just lately regarding peoples feeling and finding and opinions about other charities, that we have decided that - we are not the only ones being critised - and we are not going to join the band wagon - we do what WE think is right and we will continue to do our best.

I have to say I am really looking forward to the future, it looks good, every brick wall we meet we will have a sledge hammer to bring it down and the strength to do it - if Manuel can survive a minimum of 3 days in a lorry travelling from Portugal to Corby then we can survive too.

Well my faith in the human race has been restored! Our little illegal visitor has been given a chance. We have had so many donations and kind words about the little chap that his life is secure. We have notified the quarantine cattery that we will be able to pay his bills, which is a wonderful feeling.

We are going to open a new page, just for him, to allow everyone to see how he is growing and what is happening to him. He is so cute, like most little kittens, but he has been through so much in such a short time that he has stolen a huge chunk of our hearts.

We have realised that he will not be coming out until Feb 09 so he will be spending Christmas inside!!! I am sure we can send him a few presents though.

A BIG THANK YOU xXx

08/08/08
Today has been a very strange day! We had an illegal immigrant come through our doors and the poor little mite is now facing the next 6 months in quarantine and for the little mite to come back to NANNA after the quarantine is up we have to foot the bill!

Meet Manuel

Approx. 10 days old
I strongly believe that our quarantine rules are the best in the world, however I do beleive that since we have opened the borders, allowing pets to travel in and out of Europe, we need to look at some of the issues this has raised.

Does a 10 day old kitten, really stand a chance in quarantine after being given the rabies jab? Does it need to stay in quarantine for 6 months, surely it will show signs way before that? Why is a pregnant cat who is brought into this country and placed in quarantine allowed to have the kitten who can then go out at 8 weeks old just because they are born here?

04/08/08

Ok, this weeks quiz!

  1.  What do you go to an animal re-homing charity for?
  2.  What do you expect to pay for a re-homed animal?
  3.  What is involved in being a trustee of a charity?
  4.   Who's the mug!
We have been in the papers because we are full and can no-longer afford to keep taking in animals. We have many animals - young and old - across the charity and we are still being asked - even though they admit to seeing the TV and reading the papers - if we can take in their animal because their case is urgent!

We then have people come out to re-home an animal then get angry over the price we are asking? What is this all about?

Surely you go to an animal charity to get an animal that is in need of a home - not to get a cheap pet? When an animal comes into us we sometimes need to go and get new pen/cages for them because the ones they came in are not right for the animals. We neuter most of the animals that come through our doors and worm/flea/vaccination where necessary and all we try to do is to get some of our money back that we have spent!

As a trustee, we are responsible for the bills, we are the ones who go fund-raising - look after the animals - with the help of other UNPAID volunteers - but ultimately it is our homes on the lines when others want to dump their animals when the going gets tough! We ask a reasonable price for our animals we consider all the cost to the charity and then decide what the minimum donation should be. We very rarely cover the cost of an animal, the ferrets being the most we lose on.

Why should any trustee of any charity run the risk of losing everything just to give someone to have a place to dump their animals (usually for free), for someone else to get a cheap pet and then moan when a minimum donation is asked for.

Please come to NANNA or any other animal rescue for the new member of your family, not just to try a get a CHEAP pet! We need to be able to open our doors and keep them open, the only way to do that is to get a realistic donation, allowing us to buy new pens/cages when needed as well as food, bedding and vet treatments. Please don't come and walk away with your new pet - remember all the little faces left behind, waiting their turn. We need to keep going for a long, long time. We have already helped close on to 5,000 animals - so please help us with the next 5000+.

28/07/08
We have been headline news and we have been on Anglian news due to having to shut our doors.

We have found it hard to make the decission to close our doors and since it was made we have still had more than 15 calls a day to take in unwanted pets!

We are in debt of £6000 and each day it increases - we have wonderful pens (DONATED) but no money to feed the animals, we have been told to let the big boys, who know what they are doing is an insult to any charity who is run by volunteers not paid staff it is an insult to trustees who put their homes on the cards for what they believe to be right.

NANNA needs money - yes - but we need good forever homes more, without homes we will shut our doors for good, money will help the short term situation but this county needs to look at the future and try to we work out why this is happening.

In the meantime NANNA will continue to look after the animals we have until new homes are found for them, we will continue to try and assist the animals who need to come into us and we will continue to raise funds throughout the yeevery weekend.

What have we looking for new homes:
Cats & Kittens - 65
Rabbits - over 60
Rats - over 40
Chinchilla's - 12
Ferrets - 12
Guinea Pigs - 20

This is without our little ones who will live with us until they go chasing butterflies in the sky. So please if you have any space for an animal to fill please come to us I am sure we will find the right pet for you. We will still do home visits, we are NOT looking for just any home - we are looking for - just the RIGHT home.

18/07/08
Well some very sad news, we are having to close our doors and this may not be for just a short time! At the moment we have so many animals in our care and every day we are receiving 15-20 calls for help to take in more animals. We have NO ROOM. Not only have we no room but we have no money to continue, we have been out every weekend fund-raising at two or three events, but we are not bringing in much money. The credit crunch and scare mongering is taking hold and sadly our little furry, feathered friends are the first to feel the pinch.

We have never appealed for running costs as we beleive it is our responsibility to find that money, we have taken in the animals so we should find the money. What we do need and are appealing for are HOMES. Without re-homing we have no cash flow, without the cash flow we can not survive.

We can bring in £200-£300 per week on re-homing but at the moment we are only doing £30-£50 per week. The fund-raising tops up what we need, but this is also drying up. PLEASE if you know anyone who wants a new pet ask them to look on this site I am sure we have what they are looking for. They must be prepared to go with our re-homing policies, we may need homes but not at the expense of the animals needs!
It is not just the money it is the animals, they need new forever homes not cages. They are well looked after but they need more and they deserve more so please help if you can.

08/07/08
Last week was a week from hell!
First we had four students from a school here doing work placement, but because they did not turn up for their interviews they had no idea what it was all about and what an eye opener they had. By the Wednesday the school phoned up to say they wanted to come out at 11 that day to see how the students were doing as they could not fit us in the following week!
This turned out to be a lie - what an example to set the children- they actually wanted to come out because one of the parents had concerns over their daughters work placement. A little too late in the day, had they turned up with their daughter for the interview they would have realised very quickly how much pooh is involved in animal work!
The teachers then went on to lie again by saying that the young girl had reacted to the animals - again showing the student how it is ok to lie if you are an adult! The school then removed the other students without telling us or Connexions and they have refused to see me or ring me to discuss the problems.

We can have about 50 students a year here at my HOME to train in animal care and welfare and most of them thoroughly enjoy their time here, some are, in their opinion, are to good to be here! NANNA invests a lot of time in these students and I have just had my utility and downstairs toilet all knocked into one to give them their own area and we have put in sofa's, microwave, kettle etc for them to use, they also have the own fridge and we are improving what is offered to them all the time. We have been inspected by Connexions and carry insurance for the students and because the parents don't bother it is our faulty that the children find it upsetting!

Sadly we had one of the little Degus we had in give birth to five babies and she had eaten three of them leaving bits of bodies in the cage and the students found them and got upset because they had to clean the cage out. I fully understand how distressing it is to find this but it happens, it is called nature and if they are going on to become vets or if they are going to go to Moulton College to do a course there they are going to have to get use to finding dead animals or putting down healthy animals just because that is what the owner wants! They also objected to having to wipe up a little blood that was in the cage - what will they do when they have to stick their hand up a cows backside?

I find it sad that a school has to lie to a work placement because they judge it to be better that way. I also find it sad that this local school has not even given us a chance to speak to the headmaster to try and work a way forward. If this is what they are teaching our children no wonder some of the children to day are growing up to lie and cheat their way through life and as for the parents - unwrap them, they will have to get their hands dirty soon and you can not always be there to pick them up. NANNA works hard for the animals and students and we have lots of youngests who absolutely enjoy their time here, helping the aniamls, crying when we lose one and just having lifes experiences that they would get no where else.

The other horrible event came from a past volunteer who had taken on two wonderful cats. The first cat was Jake who came to NANNA with the most horrendous leg injury and on closer inspection the poor chap had bone cancer - NANNA paid out an awful lot of money to get Jake back on his other three legs, sadly he had to lose his bad leg. When one of our volunteers came forward and offered to foster Jake we jumped at the chance and we continued to pay for his treatment whilst being fostered. Then in came an elderly siamese called Charlie who had problems and her owners had to let her go. Charlie came in with a history of cat flu' symptoms, but had had all her injections etc since she was born so it puzzled the vets as to why she was like that.

Stess can bring out symptoms of cat flu' all to often and sometimes all it needs is time and not to stress the cat out too much during their life. So when the same volunteer asked to take her too we said brilliant!

Now the volunteer has split from his parntner, he left the two cats behind and his partner asked us to take the cats back! We arranged for them to be picked up on the friday but we got so busy we could not do it so we left a message saying we would pick them up Monday or Tuesday. We did not know that the partner had no credit on the phone but of course this was our fault.

We tried to pick up Charlie and Jake on the Monday and the Tuesday without any luck. On the Wednesday we got a call from a young girl asking if we could take in two cats - the reason for them to come in was that her and her partner had took them in to help a family out because the cats owner had died and they had no-one in the family to take them in. So her partner felt sorry for the cats and he said they would have them.

They cats where not getting on with the cat they had already got so they needed to come in to us. I explained we were full and if she could ring us back we would take them in asap - she then asked if we took back our cats to which I said we did - where they NANNA cats - Yes they were Jake and Charlie!

I was quite annoyed to think that lies had been told as the owner was not dead! We arranged for the cats to come in and the girl said that her partner was the firms hero!

Next thing was the partner of the volunteer, rings me and start f-ing and blinding down the phone at me, stating I had no right to take the cats off these people as they wanted to keep them! - It turns out that the hero had gone into work and said that HE phoned me for the vaccination details and I had insisted that the cats came back to NANNA! - Why would I want the cats in when they had a home? When I asked why he had made out that the cats owner was dead he ignored the question and carried on the abuse saying NANNA was a money grabbing charity and he was going to shut us down!

That night Michael went around to the house with the hand in form where the girl had written that the reason for the cats to come into NANNA was because they did not get on with her cat!!!!!!

We then got three very abusive text messages from the volunteer calling us everything under the sun and that the animals live in a hell hole here at NANNA and that they were in terrible condition when he first got them - one had just under gone losing his leg due to cancer and the other had an on going condition and NANNA was the only charity willing to take her in - oh and by the way he did pay £35 for each cat like everyone else but we had spent out over £300 on the cats and we said we would continue with Jakes treatment if and when needed.

The sad thing is these guys split up and they split all their animals between them, but neither wanted the cats, also the girl stated that the cats were in a bad way when she got them - Jake is very thin but this could be due to his condition - and her hero parnter has now added to the lies.

All we have done is to be here for our cats to come home to us. Please if you know these guys and girl then make your own judgement at least know you have both sides!

What else has happened? We are getting 15-20 calls a day to take in cats and other animals, we are full and can't take in any more. We are slow on the re-homing and are running costs are increasing by the day. We need to re-home to keep the cash flow running - we top it up with our fund-raising events, but at the moment the fund-raisng is our only source of income.

The best about last week and every week is the wonderful little faces that come through our doors with or without the stress - they are what we are here for and of course the majority of the volunteers we get are good, dedicated and here for the animals - NANNA is not purrfect but we do put the animals first and we give them everything we can. When we win the lottery we will give them even more, but I guarantee if we had 1000 pens we will need 1001 and someone will feel the need to moan or blame us for their failings!

Today we took in three kittens who are in very poor condition, we need your help, please look on our special needs page, be prepared for a nasty photo but we need to raise funds for this kitten and we need it now! Just a £1 will help, please if you can donate then do this group of kitten are going to take a lot of care, money and of course love to get them through this ordeal. The operation is expensive the care takes time our love is free!

When NANNA started in 2004, no-one believed it was going to be easy, we had no money (we still have no money), we did not have a brand name, just a good name. We had no charity number, but one thing we did have was plenty of animals needing our help.
Over the 4 years+ we have assisted over 4500 animals one way or another and we never say no, perhaps we say not today but try on Monday or we offer to help by using the website, but we never say no and we now famous for that! Yes famous for not saying no, because just lately we have been told by people who are in desperate need of their pet or someone's pet to come into re-homing, that they should try NANNA's because NANNA never turn them away!

Are other charities beginning to pick and choose what they are taking in? One person told me that they phoned to try and get their 8 year old black cat in to a rescue and was told they had no space for any cat to go in and was turned away but then their daughter rang and said it was a young cat and was told it could go in the next day! This is sooooo wrong, if a cat needs to come in, the age and colour should not count, it is the reason for the cat coming in that counts surely.

Perhaps the owner has passed away or gone into care or their home is being repossed. Whatever the reason these people are desperate because they do not want to put their pet to sleep, but if so called rescue centres are picking what they take in on the grounds of how quick they can re-home, then shame on them, when an animal is in need then it is in need and no-one should turn it away if they have space.

NANNA has 45 cats looking for new forever homes at the moment, 20 are over 8 years old and 10 of those are black and all of them have been turned away by other charities. Older cats take longer to re-home and as a result of these older cats being with us our cost have risen to an all time high and we have, as always, no money in the bank and we are struggling to pay our bills but we will not turn an animal away because of
age or colour.
Who could turn this face away and sleep at night?

We are proud of our fame and we will continue to find places for the most needy!PLEASE

even if it's a £1 it will be a £1 well spent!

I thought I would just post this for you all to read!
If any of you would like to email your views, we could open a page of your comment, good or bad.

Hi Petrina,

Just to let you know my new e-mail address and I hope you and yours (family, volunteers and the doggies) are fine.

Now to my grievance (you can publish this if you wish), I really have to get this off my chest.

I have been reading a week in the life of Nannas for some time now and I honestly did not know how many mindless morons are out there in this world today.

Instead of a bit of understanding, tolerance and affection for animals and people alike there seems to be a lot of hatred and animosity not to mention downright stupidity out there.

For those of you who don't know me I am the previous Mum of Finn, Megan and Molly. Due to (genuine) circumstances beyond our control we had to rehome our precious babies. Petrina, Michael and Carla were kind enough to offer us a forever home for them.
We could not believe our luck to have found a home that would take all three of them together. Anyone who has ever owned a giant breed will understand how much work and dedication these animals require. I can assure you it is a trifle more than a houseplant needs (which is all some of you people out there should ever own). Now times this amount of dedication by three Newfies of "mine" and two of their own, not to mention the other two dogs.

And to those mindless morons out there (yes, Petrina they know who they are) who keep reporting Nannas to the various authorities, sit back and think for a moment (if you can manage that):
Do you really think we would have given our precious babies, who we had loved and cherished (and still do) for a number of years to someone who doesn't care for animals and doesn't know how to look after them?

Petrina, Michael, Carla and all the volunteers do an incredible job with the resources they have. Not everyone is cut out to open their home to all the waifs and strays that need a helping hand in life.
I have phoned Petrina late in the evening for a chat and Michael was still in the field, working. They had not even had their dinner at that time, because the animals needs come first with them.
We were sat in front of the TV, dinner and the washing-up done, with our feet up!!!

So instead of running them down why don't you take a more positive attitude. If you see something that could be better (and there's always room for improvement) donate some money, or help in other ways to help Nannas help those poor unfortunate little souls that can't help themselves.

NOW PLEASE, LEAVE THEM ALONE TO GET ON WITH DOING WHAT THEY DO BEST.

Belinda McLaughlin

Petrina, you can use my name if you want because I have said nothing here that I would not say to someones face.

Lots of Love Always Belinda and Jim

What a mess we have been in since losing our computer, we have had over 400 emails and I am try very hard to catch up so please bear with us. If I have not got back to you, you may be best to try and send another email because some have been lost in the cross over!

The forum has also been neglected, for which I apologise and again please bear with me I will get round to it soon.

We have been very quiet on the re-homing front but very busy taking in pets that can for what ever reason can not be kept. We have in at the moment over 60 rabbits who are having a new area built for them. They have all got two tier hutches and we (Michael) are building them all 6' runs for them, but this may take a little time.

Our new ferret pens are also being built and they consist of 6'x6'x6' with two tier hutches and we have 10 of these being built due to the number of ferrets coming through our doors. These pens will house two/three ferrets allowing them to have lots of play area.

We have a new 16'x10' shed coming to house our rodents in and a further one coming in a couple of months once the funding is in place.

We have a lot of fencing still to do down the field and we have delayed the open day so we can get as much done during the good weather as we can.

Back in February I wrote about being reported to the DSS for working with the charity, well good news I have been cleared of doing anything wrong and I have been given permission to continue helping with the charity. Carla is still waiting for her decission to be made. What a waste of time and money just because someone has a gripe!

We have some beautiful animals in at the moment but sadly some of them are older and we are finding it difficult to re-home them, but not many rescue places are taking in the older animal which has a knock on effect, but they deserve a chance like any other and as we always take in on a first come bases on a Monday we don't really mind how old they are or what colour they are we will try and help them.

We have an awful lot of fund-raising events coming off and we are being paid to go to some of them! This, of course, is very nice and it allows us to get there without spending money that we need for day to day running costs.

We have been purchased some fantastic leaflets 20,000 in total and they have been brilliant to give out. This is something we never thought we would be able to afford so when they were offered to us we said yes please very quickly!

We have been to Earl Spencer School in Northampton this month and spoke to the children there about animal welfare and it was a brilliant day, the TV was there and the Chron came too.

This weekend we are at Rockingham Castle and Brackley Carniva, so why not pop out to see us and all the animals? We are also open and thankfully we have a fantastic team of volunteers to help.

Ok where has the sun gone? We got soaked this weekend at Lamport Hall, but we still had fun!

Well since getting the new computer everything that could go wrong has gone wrong, I can't find my disc for microsoft 2007 professional so I cannot get half my documents off the old computer. My camera has now gone wrong and I have lost my voice - cheers of joy from hubby because it is quiet - but what a nightmare.

We have some gorgeous cats in at the moment and we are steadily rehoming but we have soooooo many waiting to come in that we don't know how to cope. It seems a pity that so many animals are coming to us due to the credit crunch and landlords not allowing people to take the cats with them! Come on landlords - perhaps if you took a bigger deposit the animals can stay with their families!

I was taking to someone this week about some of the pedigree cats looking for new homes and how some rehoming centres are stating that the cat/s could be British Blue or British Shorts, Persian X's and how can you be sure they are what they are being suggested to be? I can only answer for NANNA here and this is how we sort it. We do not ever give out a pedigree to anyone, but we will show it to the new owner, that way you know it is a pedigree. Pedigree X's are at the end of the just moggies! We have two beautiful cats in at the moment and their mum was a persian and their dad just a moggie and here is a picture of what you are left with. The grey has a chinchilla coat with silver tabby markings and his SISTER is black and white!

We try and tell you how it is but when we get a very handsome stray in that we have no idea what it's background is, we just call it a moggy!

To guarantee pedigree - go to a breeder!

Forget what the cat is - go for the temperment, that is what counts not what kind it is and if you are told it is a pedigree ask to see the pedigree and if you are told it looks like or could be then remember it is just a moggy!

The sun has arrived and what fun we are having at NANNA, first thing to go wrong was the computer! New one arrived today, thank goodness it was under warranty! We have some kittens (not ready for re-homing yet) and lots of other animals looking for new homes.

Last weekend we were at the Cavalcade and I must cofess it was a brilliant weekend but I have hardly moved since. We took along Oswina and Humphrey and they were very popular especially with the children. Humphrey kept trying to beat up the dogs and he won most of the fights!

NANNA has managed to re-home an awful lot of animals so far this year, but there seems to be an endless supply of animals needing help.

It is always a pity when people get their knickers in a twist when you try to help them, especially when you are trying to help them to keep their animals! I know if it was me I would be pleased to try anything but some folks just seem to think of themselves before the animal. It a good job we can't get rid of our kids that easily!!!!

There is not a day goes by that the phone doesn't ring requesting us to take in an animal or two, we always try to find room, but it is so sad when people threaten to put the animal down when we have no room. I think they do it to put pressure on us and then when wehen we do find room and they bring them over to us we get £10 donation! It would cost £30 - £60 to put the animal to sleep! Non so weird as folk!

We have just found out our pens will be on site beginning of June so finger crossed we should have them up and running by mid June. The horse lorry should be on the road for Lamport Hall Steam Rally and we have been asked to go to the one at Holcot.

Our fund-raising calendar is very full and we really need help at them so if you have a spare day or two why not get in touch and come along to help?

Oh and I forgot to mention, Pauline (one of our volunteers), has nominated me for Pride in Northamptonshire, red faced but chuffed, it was a lovely thought.

It did however bring a rather nasty response from someone who has nothing better to do than write unnecessary emails, but you always get someone who tries to ruin what others try to do.

We have been given 20,000 leaflets all about NANNA, sponsored by a close friend of NANNA, these were something we needed but never had the money to fund them!

We have also been given the money to get a shower and washroom facilities for the students we have on site and this is going to be great. Again something we never seem to have enough money to do. A lot of people like to help charities by giving donations for a particular projects and these are very welcome, we struggle just to raise enough funds to pay the monthly bills so when someone offers to do something special then it makes it all worthwhile. So a big thank you to our sponsors you know who you are. xXx

Sunday afternoon, cold and damp and what is happening here? Mucking out of course and settling in the animals that people don't want or can't keep anymore.
We took in two young cats yesterday one a male unneutered and of course the female has not been done either and she has three kittens with her who were born on the 29th March just three weeks old and guess what? They have either kept one or rehomed it to someone else!!!! The evilness of taking a kitten away from the mother at three weeks old, it should be a criminal offence, neglect of the welfare of the animal. On asking for them to bring the kitten in they said they would straight away but they have not. To top it off we have just been told that the address given to us is a false address, false post code and false telephone number! Obviously a very very selfish uncaring family! I hope they read this and have the guts to ring me and complain.

There is a little pure white, possibly deaf kitten out there with someone who has no idea what love means because if they did they would not have taken it away from the mother at three weeks, chances of surival? Who knows but one thing for sure it would stand a better chance with its mother. Oh by the way the reason for handing in the adult cats was NO TIME FOR THEM! What about finding the time to feed through the night? I doubt they will bother bless it's little heart, what chance has it got with self-centre idiots.

We took in during March two gorgeous 10+ year old cats who did not get on with the other cats in their owners house, but we soon realised that Pankie was not well so we have ran blood test to find she has FIP which is a killer in kittens and older cats, chances are Hankie has it too, so we have opened the house up to them and guess what they are settling in really well, a couple of hisses and spits but they have found a bed each and they are guarding them but my cats are so used to visitors that they walk pass with their heads held high and they don't react, bless them! Harmony will soon be restored but at least Hankie and Pankie will enjoy what little life they have left. What a pity though, they have had to go through even more stress before their life comes to an end.

The chinchillas have settled in and the rabbits have been deloused, the degus have more space than they know what to do with and hide huddled in a corner, but with time they will be fine and belt around the game like they should.

We have our Small Animal Pet Show on Sunday and we are hoping this will be good so fingers crossed for us.

We had two rats escape this week (don't tell the neighbours), but they are back now.

13/04/08
What a day it has been today, we have taken in nine chinchillas, five rabbits, three cats, twelve degus and four rats. Never mind perhaps there will be no more animals needing to come in for a while!!
We have been really busy organising our Pet Show to be held on the 27th April at Diamonds Centre Sports Hall 1pm start, why not come along and meet some of NANNA's animals and all the volunteers should be there too.

We have are first sets of kittens born - here we go - and we are full in the nursery already!
Here is a picture of Minky with one of her babies

I know, ah is the first thing you can think of! Oh and the kitten is cute too.

We have been busy with new students starting doing there work placement with us and Moulton students have been here too and we have a bunch working through the summer with us too.

Our fund-raising calendar is FULL, ok, we have five weekend free still but I am sure they will fill up soon. Check out the events page and why not come and see us, we will have lots of the animals with us, Oswina the goose may lose her stardom to Humphrey the turkey this year.

Rushden Cavalcade is on May 3rd to the 5th and we will be there with the horses, Oswina, Humprey and lots of small furry friends, oh yes the Newfies will be there too!

Take care and come and join the fun.

I thought I would end with this proud mum xXx

Hi everyone, sorry not been up to updating the website, I have just turned 50 and I am putting it down to age!!!!!

NANNA has been very busy with animals coming in, we have another two baby goats born last week down on the farm and Ned, their father has been castrated so no more kids to be had! We have named the little goat the Humbugs family had and she is now known as Miss Baa Humbug! The two new ones are called Dawn and Spring as they were born at dawn at the start of Spring and their sister is called Eve. You can see them on the farm rescue website www.higgletypiggletyfarmrescue.co.uk so why not take a peek they are soooooooo cute. We also have baby lambs and I am hoping someone will take some photo's for me soon so I can get them on the site too.

We have a full fund-raising calendar ahead so keep updated by looking on our events page.

We have taken in a lot of Rats, chinchilla's and rabbits during March as well as cats. We have a gorgeous Jack Russel bitch in at the moment who needs to find a new home with an experienced JR handler as she does not like men!!!! and she will bite them first then she runs like the wind!

We have rehomed a lot of animals so far this years and we need help with building pens and painting them down the field so if you have a spare hour or two on a Sunday why not come along and help?

WE NEED BLANKETS, please check out your cupboards and draws and see if you can spare some for the animals. We also need a few extra hands at our fund-raising events, no shaking of tins, just helping us to look after the animals we have with us and to talk to people and kiddies about them and what NANNA is all about.

2008 has started brilliantly, with new volunteers, lots of local support and even the moaning and problems people have tried to cause has only gone on to strenghten us and make NANNA even more determined to continue helping the animals that need our help.

So wahy not join this mad family of animal lovers?

11/03/08
What a wonderful weekend we have had this weekend, we held our very first Spring Dog Show! Anglia Television turn up and it only rained twice, at that was only for seconds! A wonderful little Westie was Best in Show and it was so nice to see old and new faces there, roll on August when our annual Dog Show will happen.

We were also supported at the weekend by Wellingborough Dog Welfare, who brought some of their own dogs along to join in the FUN. NANNA has no facilities at the moment for dogs, although we have successfully re-homed through our direct re-homing page, we would like to build a couple of kennel just to try and help out a bit more where dogs are concerned and whilst we are waiting for our kennels we are supporting Wellidogs at some of their events. It is so important to help other animal Charities and NANNA has always tried to help.

We have, on occassions, taken in for the Cat Protection and other cat welfare groups, Maxicare/Animals in Need have also been helped out by NANNA when we took in a pig, snakes, spider, tree toad, water dragons etc. We have also taken in ferrets for the RSPCA not to mention the odd rabbit or kitten!

We have always tried to be there for the others and would like to think they would help our animals if the need was there. We may not hand out their numbers very often because we usually can help when help is needed or they have given out our number so what is the point?

Northamptonshire only has small rescue centres, we have no large facillities and we are all limited in how many we can help because of money.

We had this posted on our forum

"Hi all, every week I take a look at A week in the life at NANNA and I do so enjoy it. I have been over a few times, with a friend who adopted an older cat and I have brought stuff round to sell which I hope you found useful. The point of this message is how much it saddens me that you are having problems with someone who keeps reporting you for various matters. Don't they realise you are trying to help the beautiful cats and kittens that others can't be bothered with! I have four gorgeous kitties which I adore, and if I had the room (and the money!) I would take in more (much to the disgust of my neighbours, I'm sure!). So carry on NANNA, you are doing a wonderful job!"

That's so nice because NANNA has a lot of young volunteers who come rain or shine to clean out and look after the animals and they deserve the praise, not moan and groans or compalints by people who are just there to be disagreeable. Construtive critism is brilliant, distructive critism is wicked.

Lots of lovely animals have already found new homes this year and already Ann has been quietly looking after many wild-life animals that have come through our doors this Spring!

Someone said NANNA was a small charity, over 500 cats where helped last year, 200+ kittens, 150+ rabbits, 50+ rats, 80+ hamster, 25+ ferrets (plus the ones that went before June), 36 Gerbils, 2 Chinchillas, plus exotic and all the wild-life, woodpeckers, squirrels, hedgehogs, fledglings all in all over 200 wild-life animals helped by Ann. Over 1200 animals not to mention the dogs we helped last years and all the farm animals Higglety Pigglety farm rescue helped out!

Small?

3/3/08
OMG, what a joke this is turning out to be, we are obviously really causing peope grief because we have now been reported to Anglian Water!
NANNA is not a centre it is my home, to which I chose to share with animals that need help! So what is the problem?

The best thing about all of this is, we now have the right to find out who has complained about us because they have all been found to be malicious so we can go to court for disclosure of who has made the complaints and then take action against them!

But all I want to do is look after the animals who need NANNA and I have got to stay, it's lovely when other charities criticise us over our pens that the people come out and see us and see animals all chilled out, compared to frightened cats in large outdoor pen!

We have new outdoor pens coming but we will not put cats in them unless they are happy and confident in their surrounding, big pens are good but cats like to feel safe and soon chill out in our care.

We have been really busy re-homing so far this year we have had double the animals through our dors than last year and we are ready for the rush of kittens coming in this year.

We have been critised for going up to Cumbria to pick up six goats, who by the way are absolutely gorgeous, who needed to come into rescue. We were asked to help out, we did not go looking for them they found us, so sorry I don't think POST CODE lottery for humans is right and I certainly don't believe this hould be the case for animals.

Why do people have to be so mean? Could you turn this little famiy away because they wanted to come to Northants?

WOW what a night we had on the 15th! The night the men who wher mad enough did the MONTY! It was the funniest night I have had in years, they were fantastic!

Daniels,Scott and Rob (volunteers), Jon from our vets, Ray Pauline's husband and Michael all managed to cause a huge amount of laughter that night, here they are before they got them off!

We are debating if we should hire them out! Thhis of course would raise a lot of funds (and laughs).

Right, what has happen at NANNA's since I last wrote? Both Carla and I have had a visit from the DSS because someone thinks we WORK for the charity, whoever this person is they need to get the fact right before expressing an opinion.

I, 9 years ago, crushed my foot which makes it hard for me to walk, stand or lay down for long! I go through a tremous lot of pain each day and I have found some way of enjoying my life and giving a little something back!

Carla since the age of THIRTEEN has suffer with ME, she has gone without a teenage life, disco's, boyfriends and FUN! She has started to learn how to make the best of what life she has. She stuggles most weeks with fatigue and frustration, but always smiles and takes what is coming, as fate!

What I can't do, Carla can and vice-versa, we work as a team, take one away from the other and you have two pretty useless people! Add Michael to our partnership and you have a perfect working team! He works full-time, cooks most of the meals, works well into the evening with and for the animals. Why?

I tell you why, because he feels Carla and I deserve more out of our life then pain and frustration and he supports us all the way, he loves the animals as much as we do! Why do I do it when I could just sit all day infront of a television or read books? To give me a reason to try and get up in the morning, to be of use! to have purpose in my life and Carla? All she has asked is why should someone try to make out we have done something wrong when all we try to do is good!

The sad thing is, whoever feels they have achieved anything by this is very right, they have achieved something, perhaps not what they set out to achieve but something far more important than they could every dream of in their actions.

We are more determined now than we have ever been to make the Charity great and important to those that matter THE ANIMALS!

We have a few ideas who these people are and we have a message for you, bring it on but remeber the saying: What goes around comes around! If your life is so sad that all you have enjoyment from is trying to hurt others then I feel sorry for you. Carla and I have hurt everyday in our life but we also have purpose.

Now lets get on with what is important; We have managed to find some lovely homes for many animals already this year and have many others looking. We have started to make moves on the field front and THE MONTY is coming up! This you can not miss! Michael, Jon, from the vets, Daniel, Scott and Rob who are volunteers and Ray, Paulines husband have all agreed to GET THEM OFF all for the animals!

We have some very sad news, Blossom our last Kune kune has dies her sister died end of last year and she has gone to meet her. We have also had to let Lala and little Tinkey go to chase butterflies in the sky and we have heard that Tigger, Pop and Summer have left broken hearts with their owners because they too have gone to chase those butterflies, mind you Tigger is more than likely fast asleep on a fluffy cloud! Just dreaming about it, than actually chasing them. RIP my little darlings and thank you for allowing me to share some of your life.

We have some brilliant news too, we are the proud to announce the safe arrival of two little kids (goats), they will be coming home with their parents this week with their step brother Ned and I will start a new page on Higglety Pigglety web site so check it out!

We are planing to open the field at the end of April so come along and meet them in person!

29/01/08
I am going to rename this page, a month in the life of NANNA's! We have been sooooooo busy it has not been possible to get chance to sit and update this page to which I apologies.

So far we have already rehomed/helped over 60 cats this month, that is a lot of cats already, we have also helped/rehomed 20 other animals this year at this rate we will break all records by the end of the year once the fledgling, ducklings, kittens, baby rabbits etc start heading our way. So thank goodness we have had a good response to our plea for volunteers to help us look after all these little creatures.

We have also decided to help dogs find new homes, if only by direct re-homing but still more homes will be found for dogs and hopefully less dogs facing the death sentence!

NANNA has received a cheque for £3000 from the University of Northampton, as their Charity for 2007 they raised all this money for us which was fantastic, but we have also been lucky to get volunteers also.

We have also received a cheque from the children at Friars school in Wellingborough and we went along and had it presented to us by the children. We took along Teddy and Molly, our two new PR rats and a couple of rabbits. We really enjoyed meeting all the children and so did the animals and we have a new young volunteer too!

Our 20' trailer has arrived and we have a poop scooper coming which will churn down all the pooh and get rid of it!!!!! Yum!

This year we will be opening the field for people to come and see the animals. We will only open once a month so we don't stress the animals out but we feel this would be a good way of people seeing more of what we do, not just the small animals. So watch this space I am sure there will be something for everyone there!!

28/12/07
It has been nearly a month since I last posted anything on this page to which I apologies but so much has happened.

Sadly we have lost Molly our Cocker Spaniel, a beautiful dog with many issues, she intended to wag her tail whilst biting anyone who got in her way, but we loved her and hopefully gave her a good life whilst she was with us. Young Nelson was also found dead, no marks to tell us what had happen to him. We have also heard from the lady who re-homed Zorro just over a year ago to say that he had a stroke and died. All very sad news but worth mentioning as we loved them all, especially all their unique quirky ways. RIP little ones the butterflies in the skies are going to get no rest with you little darlings chasing them.

We have some funny little visitors to our home, only two of the seven very poorly kittens survived their dose of cat flu and enteritis and they have been named Drib and Drab, Little Tinkey and Poo have survived out of their litter of four and keep getting eye infections, but they are growing and looking better every day, fingers crossed for them. Aniseed is going to be renamed Anikin or Darth Vader because he is extremely naughty and his little sister Lala is coming on leaps and bounds, even though she will only be with us a short time as her rib cage tucks back on it's self she is full of life and fun so she will be given the world until the time comes when she can play no more.

Humbug has come on a lot too and is tolerating Minty who is as naughty as Aniseed. The two little ones we called Flo and George have come of age and are going to be neutered in the new year, considering no-one wanted to give them a chance they have come bouncing back to health and are doing well.

Although we have had a very hard year it has made us all stronger and ready for what is coming our way next year.

We have had some wonderful news, someone is getting my lorry on the road so that NANNA can use it next year to transport the animals, we have been given two 20' metal containers and 10 hedgehog winter pens, we have raised enough money to replace two of our outdoor pens, too late for this winter but we will be ready for next winter. We ahve enough money to pay all our bills and a little left over, not a lot but enough to allow us to breath.

We have been Northampton University's charity this year and we have made new friends from there along with lots of volunteers. We were given £3000 by someone and without it we would not be in a good position for the new year xXx bless you Roger!

We have a new volunteer who wants to help with the paperwork, yipee! We have had an offer from a Chartered Accountant to help with the animals and book keeping yipee again. Not to mention someone coming to slab the back garden, someone else coming to help build the new pens.

All we need now is to be left alone by the ones who only want to do harm. So called animal lovers who can not see beyond their own opinion or view.

Bring on 2008 and may we all have a wonderful year and a year where animals find forever homes, where they will be loved for what they are.

A very Happy New Year is wished to you all from all the animals past and present and from all the volunteers at NANNA.

2/12/07

Michael, Ann, Carla and Petrina would like to make the following statement.

This year 2007, has been a very testing time, we have lost two trustees, including our Treasurer!

However we have gone from strength to strength thanks to the fantastic team of volunteers.

The unsung hero's who have joined NANNA with one aim, to help the animals, without these fantastic people and support of our faithfull followers we would not have survived!

So three cheers for the unsung hero's

We have not rehomed any animals this week but there is always another day, we are still trying to get rid of the cookies but it is taking longer than we thought, it is sad that people are finding it hard to look at the homes wanted cat page as we have soooo many cats looking for new forever homes and by putting that cookie on that page has just mean, so mean to the animals, why have you done it? Never mind, I thing we have learnt this year is people are not what they seem.

Our Craft Fair was quiet yet we managed to raise £252.60 not bad for a fun day. We met a lot of really nice stall holders and all have expressed an interest in coming back next year.

Our next event is our Christmas Party which is on this Saturday and the cost is £10 per person and £5 for children. We need to raise £6500 by Christmas and we have managed to raise £3363 so far and we have a lot of events coming up.

We still have kittens bad sadly not the kind people are looking for! We have Merlin and Spirit, Ghost and Shadow are in desperate need of a new forever home, so please try and help us with their plight.

25/11/07
Well fund-raising this weekend was through at Banbury and we had fun in the freezing cold, all dressed up as animals and singing our hearts out! Bit strange that people actually paid for us to shut up though!!!!

Well we made an effort to cheer up everyone and we had fun trying.

Minx found a home and two little rats Murphy and Guinness have found a new home together. We have our raffle tickets for sale £1 per ticket first prize is a Philips DVD recorder, a meal for two is 2nd and there are approx another 20 prizes of many goodies so please support us, we only have 3000 tickets to sell and why should you buy our raffle tickets against the other thousands out there? Simple the animals need you to, NANNA will have over 150 animals staying with us this Christmas and they deserve a little something in there stocking, so come on dig deep and buy a ticket or ten!=7%gwz whoops kitten walking over keyboard!!!

This is little Lala one of the eight kitten with cat flu, stretched out waiting for Christmas Dinner
Go on buy a raffle ticket or ten.

WE HAVE COOKIES!! Not chocolate chip either, that is why you are having trouble getting on the site! NANNA home page, volunteers page, cat re-homing page and events page have all been infected so I am tryig to sort it out, they say they may have been attached by an outsider!!!!!! Whoever you are chocolate cookies next time please :=)
Diary, still missing, and cookies are just about the best it gets this week, we have sadly lost some little kittens to cat flu' but the other are coming along nicely so fingers crossed. The eight in my bedroom went up for re-homing today and 6 have found new homes, just the two bigger ones left bless them
Cat show tomorrow (18th) 11am start so why not come along? To late and you missed a fantastic day, check the photo's on See what fun we have page. Whilst we were there Oliver looked after the kittens and here is a photo of him taking his job seriously!

Oliver is over 9 years old and he loves it when he is bigger than the cats, it is not often he's bigger so he make the most of it. This little kitten is called Minty and along with Humbug, Aniseed and Lah-lah are being nursed back to health after coming down with cat flu'. Bless them xxx
Six of the kittens from the bedroom go to their new forever homes today after the home visits have been done.
Great news all eight kittens have been rehomed and so has PLODDER!

Busy, busy, busy what a week we have rehomed the Highlander and Cindy and Fee and Foo have all landed on their paws and last night little Jack and Frostie are beginning their new start in a wonderful home. We were fund-raising in Banbury on saturday and we have been busy getting the cat show sorted for this weekend and the craft fair on the 2nd December.

I have been having fun with the website too, for some reason you cannot access the Homes Wanted Cats page, but I can? So what you need to do is click on the red cross on the box that comes up and then click on your search bar (not our one of the left). This should then get you in. Sorry I am trying to sort it, but not too sure how.

The squirrels, Honeysuckle and Sweet William broke out of their pen today and they have cause havoc. The room they are in looks as if it has been hit by a hurricane. We have named it Hurricane Squirrel, they have broken ornaments, ripped up some paper work to make a nest and they have eaten the degus food and the rat food! So all in all they have had fun and we are picking up the pieces.

We still have lots of kittens looking to go to new homes, but most are small and weedy looking bless them but they need to get re-homed to have any chance of survival.

Autumn kittens are always the weekest, mum may have already had two other sets of kittens before these. They are then dumped with or without mum into a rescue centre and then rehomed to new forever homes, all taking it's toll on their health. Bless them x. We have quite a few poorly ones at the moment but all are doing fine, I will keep you posted.

As you have read above I have lost my diary and I am lost without it, it has all the past and future operations in it, who has been rehomed and when and where, all our fund-raising events and all our school days in it so if you have seen it please ring me 01933 650372 I am really lost without it and we our going to be letting people down, because I don't know where I'm going!!!!

HOW MANY SHOPPING DAYS TILL CHRISTMAS?
NANNA will have approx 150 animals eating Christmas Dinner with us and each one will find a little something extra under the Christmas Tree! This year we are going to launch a new idea so watch this space!!!! Don't forget our Sponsorship Page and remember because we are small we can be personalised! Meaning we can adapt the forms, certificates to suit your needs. If there is a particular animal you want to Sponsor then let us know and that animal will be on your certificate and a little letter from them can also be pawed.

29/10/07
This week has been very eventful, visit by the RSPCA giving us NO warnings, NO advise, just a clean bill of health. Always nice to know we are doing it right, and that the animals are well care for and all looking fit and healthy.

We also had a very busy weekend, rehoming Mohican and her funny little face, also re-homed was Clover and Lily and the other couple to find a home this week were Ree and Cycle the two little ones who got dumped over my garden gate on Tuesday! The two little kitten Guy and Fawkes are going on Wednesday evening to run riot in their new home.

We are busy organising our Halloween Broom Broom Rally to be held on the 31st October and we have a disco and buffet the total cost of this extremely horrifying evening is only £5 per person and £2.50 for children.NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN US!! To late it is over and what a fantastic night it was. Michael and Gordon were on patrol at the graveyard scarring the life out of people taking part in the car rally and the disco and food was good too. Roll on next year!

Sadly we have been hit with cat flu' in the cat room, not too bad but we have closed our doors so we can get on top of it. None of the cats seem to have any problems, just a lot of sneezing, so we are burning oils and feeding strong smelling foods, YUM!

We had a very quiet weekend but lots got done, we have organsised an awful lot of fund raising events check them out on our events page.

The younger volunteers are organising a childrens page and they have taken over the running of the Sponsorship of the animals so if you can support them they are eager and deserve the support, check out the Sponsorship page, wonderful Christmas presents!

The plot thickens........ not only are they using our name NANNA, but they are using our photos too! They are re-homing this little chappie (left) as Billy but it is a photo of one of our cats living with Ann?
I bet the little cat called Billy has an identity problem! Well whatever next I wonder? Yes this little one is being re-homed as Stanley (Right) but it is Bubbles and a female rehomed by NANNA, April 06, she did not have very good eye sight,  but she could tell she was a female cat! How decieving is this? I rest my case, we are honest and very truthful and get critisied for it!
These pictures have now been removed (23rd)thank you.

NOW WHAT? (23rd) We have an unexpected visitor to our home, in the shape of a RSPCA Inspector, he was following up a complaint they had recieved about the filthy dirty conditions and the poor conditions ALL the animals were in!

As some of you may be aware the RSPCA don't ring to make an appointment and they just turn up on this occassion it was 1.30 (Lunch time) and caught us doing our daily routine of scrubbing out litter trays, but all animals with food and water and not one of them stressing or wanting. So he left leaving us with a clean bill of health. He could give us no warnings or advise!!!!!!!

Thank you whoever you are for sending them out to us, it just keeps us on our toes and always nice to know we are needed for the animals.

You have, however, upset an awful lot of good genuine people, including the hard working volunteers here at NANNA, who feel that their hard work and dedication to the animals is being questioned by someone who felt they could not voice there opinion whilst here!

Me, I just wish people would allow me to live my life the way I wish to live it, I don't wish to live in a house without these animals I wish to live in my home with the animals and of course my family. THE ANIMALS WILL COME FIRST, before holidays - before what people think, this is not a way of life it is my life!

NANNA has been going for nearly four years and we have our second cat show coming up so please come along and join in. If you have had cats of us it is a wondeful opportunity to see all our cats again.

This weekend we have had some wonderful news, the three siamese have found a new home, and Peanuts and Pop and Tic-tac have found new forever homes meaning all our longest residents have found their new places. Tina also found new homes and Tally and Ho also got rehomed and two little girls who came in the morning got rehomed in the afternoon. Purrfect day!

We had two kittens dumped in a cardboard box down at Irthlingborough Lakes come in on Saturday and to say they were hungry is an understatement, they were STARVING! They tried to rip the packet of food apart before we could even open it. They have been checked over and will be up for re-homing this weekend.
Their names - Jack and Frostie
On 22nd we had two very pretty cats Dumped over our gate garden in open topped cat carries between 6.30pm and 9pm. We only found them because we had Keren staying for tea that night else they may not have been found until the following morning. They would have been out all night in the freezing cold with no protection or blankets. The person who dumped them could not use the excuse that my five Newfondlands were out there because they were in the house with me!

Their names - Ree and Cycle

The debate continues..........
Your responses to my moan was 90% thought that the vets and people concerned, not that anyone knows who these people are, expect the people concerned,  were tossers, idiots, out there just for the money and some people do charity work for CV's and looking good! Ouch..... The only one who has critised the moaning has said that I should be able to put up with the critism as there are more than a couple of vets and not everyone is perfect or will agree with what we are trying to do. Keep those emails coming and I will keep telling it as it is. I personnally take my hat of to those people who work voluntarily with animals, it is not a committement but a way of life, but remember we are all trying to do the best for the animals and it is hard out there. We can't please everyone and besides the humans don't count!

Now for this week, we have rehomed quite a few and Frazzle has come home after being missing for 5 weeks so there is hope for Giles! Peanuts and Pop had been reserved and were on their way to their new forever home but did not get there because they new forever home changed their minds and said the timing was not right at the moment, it is a pity they had not thought of this before coming out on a Sunday, which is our day off, picking two gergeous kittens and getting us half way there before telling us! The two little tabby girls also lost their new home before being given a chance, but this perhaps is for the best as they are very shy and we are now getting purrs and headbutts from them, so, fingers crossed, this weekend they will purr their way into the right peoples hearts.

The three siamese have been reserved so fingers crossed for them too, they will be leavung us on Sunday. They have been with us a long time but there is always someone out there if you give it time and I was not going to split them up, they have already lost everything they have known and they were not going to lose each other.

Sadly one little kitten that was rehomed earlier this year has died from FIP, which is part of the corona-virus family, which 70% of cats in the world carry. NANNA sees this illness because it is stress related and of course any animal coming into rescue is stressed. I am designing a page which will answer some of the questions people ask about this illness and I am going to write it in laymans terms, leaving out the big words. Look out for this page to go live soon.

Some very sad news today (Wed) Charlie-boy has died, he was pure white long haired ferral cat who had terrible tummy problems, his favourite food was mice! He would not touch cooked meat or cat food only raw meat, hence his tummy problems. He was taken to the vet on Monday because he had blood pouring out of his bottom, placed on anti-biotics and pro-kaolin, he came home looking very pitiful. Today (wed) when he stood up he was looking better but it was still pouring from him, not the blood just pooh! So Michael and I both looked at each other and said a decission would have to be made. But that decission was taken out of our hands, because tweny minutes later he had been hit by a car and killed. Although Charlie-boy was deaf he always went to see my neighbour on the same side of the road as me, but he never went over the road! I do believe in fate and I believe the decission was taken from me to make it easier, however there is now another little basket laying empty in our home.

It may seem that we go through a lot of deaths, we do, but we could lose one every month for the next three years and still have some here. It is a numbers game the more you have the more you can lose, we just hope that the life they have had was a good one and someone has cried for them. Purrfect comfort for purrfect little souls.

NANNA has had a very bad year this year, we have lost two trustees and we have had a finacial struggle but we are going too keep it together, but please remember if you have had a pet from us or brought one to us, we still need your help! If you can do a standing order for just £3 a month it will allow us to be here next year and the year after, for all the animals who are heading this way. 450 cat have been through our doors this year and if we got £3 per month for each cat that you would give us £16,200 per year to survive.
We would still be going out dressed like this fund-raising every week, as we need between £2500 & £3500 per month to cover all our bills. NOT WAGES we don't get paid!!! This would also allow us too improve our pens, allow us to blood check for Fiv FelV and just take away some of the stress of where the money is coming from to pay the next set of bills. I know all charities are always asking for money, but please help a little local one to survive. We don't turn away any animal, we may ask for time to find space for them or even try direct re-homing, but we are here for them. Please help us to stay here. Just £3 per month will help us, if you can help, email me and I will send you a standing order mandate to you and don't  forget to Gift aid your donation. You can use paypal but we do get charged for this so we don't get all that you send, but something is better than nothing!!

I thought it would be nice to introduce to you some of my own animals and this week I am going to introduce to you Lucy my Springer Spaniel. Lucy is full of fun, she is Michael's dog although officially mine, she only has eyes for Michael! The story I am going to relate to you happened last year:-

One Saturday, Michael was moving 14 sheep over to Sywell, and he took Lucy (the springer) with him. On getting there Michael jumped out of the 4x4 (automatic) to open the gates, the sheep were safe in the trailer attached to the 4x4, Lucy was wagging her tail in the back of the 4x4, when all of a sudden Michael noticed the wheels on the 4x4 where moving the vehicle was going in reverse.

Lucy, in her excitement, had jumped into the driver seat and knocked the stick into reverse, Michael ran to the door but Lucy got there first and promptly hit the lock, which of course is a centralised locking system!

Tail still wagging she then locked the windows, luckily at this point, the 4x4 and trailer had got stuck in the mud, but the wheels where still going round and down!

Michael had to break a window to get into the car, on doing so he shouts, as you would, at the dog, who promptly pees herself on his seat.

We contacted the insurance company ref. the window and as a joke they suggested we got driving lessons for Lucy, but they don't think we would get insurance for her. They then asked, seriously, if at the time of the accident did the driver of the vehicle have our permission to driver the vehicle?

So we didn't know if Lucy would be done for driving without a licence, without insurance and of course they could have thrown the book at her and go for taking without owners consent!

One thing is for sure Lucy is 'grounded'. But who's the MUTT?

I thought you would like to know that whether we have four, three or two legs we are ALL as mad as each other! Never a dull moment.

10/10/07
Apologies everyone who has emailed asking what has happened to the weekly updates! I just have not had the time to update this page, but here we go and I am going to warn you now that I am in the mood for a good old moan, to help you I will put the moaning in a bracket, so you can skip it if you wish but remember writing it down always makes things seem better and you can always email your response!
(The moan begins, apparently there are some people and vets out there who don't like what we are trying to do! They have disassociated themselves from NANNA's due to what? From what I can gather they feel that NANNA has a lot of illnes here. Yes we do have some illness and I write about this all the time on this page, we do not hide it nor do we cause it! We have been critised for rehoming (LAST YEAR) some kittens who had cat flu' and the vet's in question stated that these kittens should not have been rehome in their condition. We did rehome a litter of kittens who had cat flu' with the full support of NANNA and the full awareness of the new owners.

Just what would the vet advise we do? Turn the animals away? Put the animals down? What is the saying "We never put a healthy animal down?" What is an unhealthy animal? Cat flu', ringworm, coronavirus 70% of cats in the world carry this one! Flea alergy is another one, worm infested, old, three legged, one eye and there are many more conditions the list is endless, but all of these are treatable, except the old age! So do you put an animal down to improve on what people think? NOT ME, I will rehome an animal who is poorly where I believe it to be in the animals welfare to be out of the cage and in an one to one situation with their new owner but only if the new owner is prepared to take this on. NANNA has never knowingly re-home a sick animal, without first notifying and talking to the new owner.
    Purdy pictured below
One example was a little cat called Purdy, she came to us via another re-homing place and she was a nine years old, neutered and very fat tabby cat. Her new owner got worried because everyone who saw her stated she looked pregnant, for a cat to be nine and pregnant would mean a cat of very poor condition, not this cat she was lovely and healthy, but the lady took her to one of the vets that critises us and they stated that the cat was pregnant with up to 8 kittens and to confirm this they would need to do an x-ray which would cost £65! The lady was obviously furious with us and turned up cat in tow demanding we did something about it. Thankfully she did not have the x-ray done, but we did at our vets at a cost of £15-£20. Guess what? No kittens just fat!!!!!!!!!!! But sadly the lady was so destressed about the whole situation she decided against keeping the cat who ended up staying with NANNA a further few weeks until someone came along and took her as their pet. On speaking to the vet concerned she stated that she only thought the cat could be pregnant. No apology or any concern shown to the cat for what she was put through.

It is always sad when one charity critises another but it happens and we are critised for not handing out other charity details! However why would we hand out other charity details when it is usually those charities who have given the people our details? We are apparently unhelpful to people who ring us, although we try never to refuse an animal and we will bend over backward to find space for them. Unlike  one charity, when a little dog who needed to find a new home and the owner was told, apparently, by a local charity that they could only help if the owner let the dog out and it was picked up by the RSPCA, Dog warden or police and they took the dog to the charity! Madness, this little pup could have been killed, injured or frightened beyond repair. But then if they are paid by the authorities to take in dogs then I suppose money counts!

If we can not help people we usually give them catchat.org details which will then list all the cat re-homing places in Northants not just NANNA's. But we alway say to ring us back if they have no luck and at least we do speak to most people and not just leave the ansa phone on!!!!!

NANNA is not perfect in any sense of the word, but the animals that come in to us are well looked after, they are given every opportunity to find a new home and NOT put to sleep to make room for a more appealing little face. Our kittens are re-homed in pairs for the welfare of the kittens, we have no money to get every cat vaccinated, blood tested but most have been vet checked.

We never turn our backs on our animals once they have left us, we live with ill cats in our home, or their home! Not everyone likes the way we live and would not live that way themselves, but that is our choice. We only take into the house cats that are poorly, not pedigree cats that look good or take in because they a white or whatever colour we may prefer. Animals don't lose their lives because they have come to us, they are not put down after being signed over to us. I will argue with ANYONE who says it's just another rescued animal, there's plenty more out there, put it down and move on.

My home is full of love and laughter from the animals & family I share it with. People are always made welcome at our home and our volunteers are treated like family, but it is always so called friends that stab you in the back not the animals so give me the animals and keep you can keep the friendship.

We are not paid nor is anyone who is involved in our charity, we are all volunteers, most of us pay to be involved, by buying food, litter, petrol, telephone calls, stamps, paper, ink, buying printers computers, cages, sheds, runs and anything else the animals need that the charity can not afford. I and every trustee NANNA has now, is there only for the animals, giving up everything for them not for what other people think!)
This is what matters!

Moan over so let's see what else has happen since last writing! Sadly many animals have come into us, but also many have found new homes we have set up an appeal to replace our outdoor pens for waterproofed ones that we can use during the winter months.

Old Rodders has died of old old old age, as an old boy, escaped got chased by dogs and badly biten and bruised by the attack and then got run over! £300 later his leg was repaired and he came and stayed with us and he has been given everything a cat could be given and even though he only had five or so years with us those years were purrr-fect for him. (I'll finish this over the next few days).

Sorry it is always so upsetting to report when one of our little ones have moved on to chasing those butterflies in the sky.

We have in with us over 12 rats, 18 gerbils and degus, not to mention the many ferrets we have in.

Signing off now as the next week is upon us and this week is coming to a close.

23/09/07
Since last writing we have had some really sad happenings, little Winnie had an incurable condition (FIP)and was heading for a lot of suffering so with guidence from the vet we had her put to sleep. We also lost Hazard who had a tumor.

We have been hit with Myxi with the rabbits even though they have been vaccinated TWICE this year. Thankfully it only took five rabbits but still five too many.

We have also lost some of the special needs little cats in our care, Tulip has passed away and so has Wizard Spudnik they passed away within days of each other. Giles my own very large  black and white cat has gone missing along with Razzle-fazzle.

Lastly we lost Squidgey our resident squirrel who passed away on the 5th September, she was such a funny little lady alway happy to come and see the children and when she escaped she never went too far from home.

So over the last twenty-one days lots of tears and heartache and it has been hard to face writing this page, but there is always another little creature waiting to have a chance of a life and two lovely little squirrels called Honeysuckle and Sweet William have come in after being orphaned.

We have been fund-raising most week-ends but we still have no money, but we don't have any debts either so I suppose we are doing well. We have a new fund-raising committee and we still need others to join in, if you would like to join us then give us a ring 01933 650372.

Week ending 02/09/07
This weekend we have reserved Cuddles and Snuggles, Petal, Bibs & Bobs, Hope & Faith. We have rehomed Elliot and Duke and Hazzard have also found a new home.

Little Winnie is waiting for her results from blood tests, so fingers crossed for her. We also had some terrible news this week, young Ringo has died and on the same day Ozzie had been diagnosed with diabetes and a hard decission had to be made.

Ozzie has had a very sad short life and we can now put a reason to his behavour.
His last owner got his mum to bring him back and she dumped him in a rabbit hutch after she got no reply at the house.
The reason for him coming back was he had began to spray every where!

On coming back to us for the sixth time we were really disappointed, but we welcomed him and made him at home in his usual pen and sadly he soon settled. We soon picked up he had got a problem because he piddled a little too much so we took a sample to the vets with Ozzie in tow and sadly we found out what was wrong.
Diabetes is bad in any form but for a fun, loving outgoing cat it is very hard to control and the only way it would be possible here at NANNA's we would have had to pen Ozzie for the rest of his life. Even then he may not have survived for long. If he had been taken to the vets sooner would we have been able to save him? I doubt it but had his last owner had bothered to find out why he had started to spray then he may have spent his last days in a home enviroment.

Week ending 26th August 2007
What a fantastic weekend we have had we have managed to find new forever homes for 18 cats/kittens and a further three have been reserved. We have managed to clear all our back debt and have a little money in the bank (until the next set of bills come in)! We have found homes for our longest resident (Zanusi) and our sadest resident (Pixie) and we have seen some of the cats, that have settled in their new homes, for micro-chipping and built three new ferret runs all in a weekend!

I have been saddened also this week because one of our special needs little cats has been taken poorly, his name is Wizard Spudnik, seen here peeping over a rabbit hutch pretending not to be fishing in the pond that is directly behind that hutch!

About three weeks ago Wizard Spudnik came in with a tiny scratch between his shoulder blades he started pulling his coat out and within three days he had a huge bold patch with lots of scratches all over it.

(This picture was taken two days before Spuddy
was taken ill, Spuddy is his nicknname)
We took him to the vets for a check up and was told it could be FIV or FELv, so we had him tested and the results were negative, but the area was getting bigger, so we had further blood taken to see if there was any thing else they would show. The results have been a puzzle.

When Wizard Spudnik came to NANNA's he had been dumped in a box on our doorstep covered in flea's and maggots The maggots had began to eat into his back end and he was only approx 4 weeks old he was obviously a ferel kitten and began to attack us and even pohed down us when we picked him up. He was so frightened and we rushed him to the vets after removing as many fleas and maggots as we could. He was given pain relief and antibiotics and as many prayers we could give him. Wizard Spudnik is now three years old and quite a handsome young tom.

The result to his blood test have shown the same results you would expects from a cat of 17 years old not a young three year old! His kidneys are failing and we do not expect him to be with us much longer, we have no idea what has caused this and our vet is puzzled too. If anyone has any idea or if you have had the same sort of thing happen to one of your cats please let me know! Spuddy deserve better than this, he has already gone through so much in his short life!

Week ending 19th Aug 2007
This week we have been heavily involved with the Northampton Balloon Festival and I would like to apologies if you have been trying to get us, I left home Thursday morning and arrived home Monday evening. Although we had volunteers helping with the animals at home we had no one to answer the phones!

Sadly two sets of kittens did not go out due to what? Time wasters! There is no other reason that I can see and if I am upsetting them then they should think twice about coming out and reserving animals that could have been rehomed else where that weekend.

I agree it is important to be sure of what you are taking on, but if you have doubts, don't reserve. If it is meant to be they will still be there when you are certain, but don't reserve them stopping others from offering the forever home they are looking for.

This week due to being closed the re-homing has been slow, a young cat called Annie has been rehomed but we have had quite a few people interested in some of the other, so fingers crossed we will have a good weekend this weekend coming.

The Balloon Festival has been great, we are all exhausted, we all got wet on many occassions but we managed to raise enough money to clear some of our back debt which is always a nice feeling.

Our next big event is at Kelmarsh Hall on the 9th September, followed by an event at Towcester race course on 22nd 23rd September and then we are at Banbury Canal Day on October 7th.
I will put some photo from the Balloon Fest on the site soon.

Best in Show

and our Top Five Dogs

Weekending 12th Aug 2007(Sunday update at the bottom).
This week I would like to introduce to you one of our special needs cats who lives with us at NANNA, his name is Jesta, full name Jesta-nother one. Jesta came into NANNA's and stayed when all his siblings died and he stopped growing. He came into the house as if he owned it, but he did not overly enjoy being picked up or cuddled. This did not matter because we had a lot of little over-friendly cats living with us.

When Jesta began to grow all over, we decided he should be neutered, but due to his illness (cornavirus) we knew it would be dangerous and he may not recover from the operation. Every cat takes that risk when neutered, but it is far better than dying FIV or Felv. So off for the chop Jesta went.

Trouble hit half way through the op and Jesta stopped breathing and they had to breath for him for sometime until he started to breath again. I got a call to say what had happened and I got into the car to go and see him. When I arrived they said he wasn't doing too good, he was breathing but not responding. So prepared for the worst I saw him.

He was in a very poorly state, he was on a drip, his eyes where open but he looked blank. I knew then that he did not stand much chance of pulling through but I asked if they could give him the night to see how he did. The next day I asked if he could come home? I asked if he was in pain and I was assured that he was not but they did not think he would pull through, so I could be taking him home to die.

It is hard to know what to do, your head says one thing your heart says something else. But with the assurance from the vet I brought him home. I cried all day with him laying in my arms, you see I did this to him when I made the decission to neuter him. All his little mates came to see him and it soon became apparent that Jesta was blind.

The picture here shows Jesta laying on the cat's tv (a very large tank of gerbils), just after he came home.
Tiny Tim of course was with him and cleaning him (Tiny Tim is the uncle to all the litle ones) and little Boring was also there.

As the day went on everyone took turns to look after him. We where feeding him by syringe and giving him water too. A day after he came home we talked about what we should do and broken hearted we decided we would take him to the vets the next day.

Jesta just slept, he had not tiddled and his bladder was full to bursting. I did not know how to empty his bladder so I phoned around, at 9.30pm on the friday, to see if anyone had any ideas and someone said just keep firm pressure on the bladder and he should release what was in there.

At this point I must point out that Jesta had not been responding to anything other than my voice, when I spoke to him he lifted his head and just layed it back down. So holding him over the litter tray pressing his bladder was not as easy as it sounded, but he pee'd and pee'd and pee'd and pee'd, the look on his little lost face was purr relief.

About 11pm I gave Jesta a kiss and started to cry again as I knew that in the morning he was going on his final journey. He lifted his little head and then he tried to stand up! I held him and supported him while he wobbled, unsure and frightened, but trying.

I took him to bed with me and cuddled him all night so tightly that I woke up hardly able to move. Jesta was laying fast asleep but as soon as I spoke to him he tried to get up. Jesta was beginning to respond, so we decided not to take him to the vet but give him the weekend to see how he did.

By the Monday he was still unsure on his feet but he was now eat on his own, piddling on his own, head in litter tray, bum on floor, but that did not matter he was pulling through. Everyone was warning me he may not make it and I shouldn't get my hopes built up.

Jesta's operation took place on the 18th April 2007 and today he was chasing a fly in the kitchen, still blind, but coping, he runs up the stairs, he uses his litter tray, which is more than can be said about Bagpuss our pedigree Ragdoll! He races you to the bathroom, whilst you are sitting on the loo, he likes to sit on your lap and have a cuddle and you can't refuse his little face, but he has to get there first so you don't get chance to shut him out!

We have to make choices sometimes and you can never now whether your choice was right or wrong but on this occassion I think it was right.

We have to take extra care not to let him out because he keeps falling in the fish pond, but he just swims to the otherside and climbs out! He is happy and enjoying his life, he is more friendly and loving towards us since his operation.

This is why we give up our home to them, our holidays and fight for what we do. This IS what NANNA is all about nothing more nothing less!

You can help us & Jesta to continue his life here at NANNA's by sponsoring him for just £3 per month or £10 per year and we will send you a certificate and newsletters about all the special needs cat/kittens at NANNA's. Just send us an email and ask about our sponsorship scheme nanna04@btinternet.com .

So far this week (thur) we have taken in three cats and sadly we have had to say no to 12, but we will try and take them in soon!

Our fund-raising this weekend is at SYWELL Country Park, where will be holding our fourth annual FUN Dog Show. Just come along and bring the dog. Starts 11am and it is only £1 per class or 6 classes for £5.
SUNDAY UPDATE
WOw what a fantastic weekend, the Dog Show was brilliant, it is always nice to see the same faces each year.

Saturday was one of the busiest days on record, we managed to rehome/reserve 22 cats/kittens in two hours! Plus two cats were rehomed during the week. What a fantastic result! Thank you everyone who has taken on any of our animals.

WEEKENDING 5TH AUG 2007
Let us begin this weekly diary with a typical Monday the phones start to ring at 8am and one thing you will learn very quickly is 'I don't do mornings' so already in a not so good mood I answer the phone to the always hated question "Do we take in cats?"

On explaining that we do take in cats I am asked if we could take his cat in because he is moving, when was he moving? This Wednesday!
I explained that we had no room and had he tried any other Charity to see if they could help him.

His response was he had tried all the major charities, one was not answering the phones because of the flood and his situation was not an emergency so week back in a weeks time when they are not so busy, another said it would be three weeks before they would return his call as they were full, another just rang and rang and another gave him our No. because he was out of area.

He then went on to say he had never heard of NANNA although we were local to him!

I explained that NANNA had been going for over three years and we had helped over three thousand animals in that time to which he exploded stating: How dare we call ourself a charity when obviously we were just con artists, we can't be animal lovers because if we were we would do something to get his cat in. We were his nearest rescue center and it was our duty to take his cat.

At that I asked why was he shouting at me when I was only the smallest unknown charity with the common descency to answer my phone at 8am in the morning? I also asked when was the last time he gave NANNA a donation to help us improve and increase our facilities? I then went on to explain that it was his responsibility to take care of his cat for life and just because he was moving into a new house and did not want the cat anymore how did that justify in shouting at me?

He hung up! The cat has found it's way to us via another route so it is safe.

We also took in, all in all, nine calls for cats coming in, we took in two fledglings in (more early mornings) and one rabbit!

Two home visits were carried out by Michael and two kittens rehomed, we had a new volunteer started and she seemed to enjoy herself.

Sadly we had to turn away over 10 cats today as we had no room to take them in.

The rest of the week went very much as the start, phone calls asking us to take even more cats! On Wednesday though someone put their cats in a carrier and took them to Irchester Country Park and dumped them there. Even though these cats are micro-chipped their owner is denial! Lucky for them a off duty police officer found them and brought them to us.

Dumped like trash!

Then if that was not bad enough on Wednesday night approx 10.30pm a car pulls into a car park in Geddington, sits there for 1/2 hour before driving off. A car parked in the same place saw something move as the car drove away so the driver walked over and took a look.

Guess What He Found?

AND

The mother has a very bad case of flea alergy and the kittens have the start of cat flu' which is fatal in some kittens. WHY oh WHY?

Friday was a good day! Two sets of kittens went to their forever homes and hopefully with all the prays in the world they will never find their way into a rescue center again.

Saturday we rehomed Kitty and Baby, Patch and Bimbo got reserved and Aeowyn and Gandalph will be home visited on Sunday and so will Zeus and Hera. A little male rabbit has also found a new doe to go and live with.

Sadly Lolly one of the younger rabbits has died leaving little Scamp on his own.

Going up the stairs we have
Tiny Tim, Tulip, Thor, Beth and Snoopy
some of the sepecial needs cats living at NANNA's.

  SUNDAY UPDATE
This morning we safely delivered six bonnie little kittens, although these kittens are very small, a lot smaller than the should be, they seem to be doing well.

Mum came into NANNA with two of her last lot of kittens, the excuse was they could not afford to have her done and they were trying to save up! A cat is pregnant for 72 days 2.5 months the kitten stay with her 8 weeks another 2 months. If you put £10/£15 per month away that will give you £45/£67 if your vet wants more than that, change your vet!!!!!!!

One other option is don't let the cat out until they are neutered and another thought is, if you can not afford to neuter the cat can you really afford the cat?
  This is the little girl!

Petrina's favourite question - WHY?
